Abstract

This preliminary study aims to assess the needs and perceptions of Roblox-based learning media among junior high school students in Palangka Raya City as a basis for developing innovative learning media. The study was conducted using a descriptive survey method through quantitative and qualitative data collection. The research subjects consisted of junior high school students in grades VII–IX and their subject teachers, selected purposively to represent a variety of educational technology learning experiences. The research instruments included a media needs questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations to evaluate technology readiness, learning preferences, and challenges faced in implementing AR-based media. The study results showed that most students had a high interest in using interactive technology-based learning media such as Roblox–AR, and demonstrated a significant need for media that could combine game and learning elements to increase motivation and conceptual understanding. On the other hand, teachers reported challenges in digital competence and device availability as factors that need to be considered in media development. These findings provide an important basis for designing and developing Roblox–AR-based learning media products that are contextual, effective, and appropriate to the characteristics of junior high school students in Palangka Raya City.
