Utilizing the Environment Around the School as a Natural Laboratory

Learning in the Biology Education Study Program requires not only mastery of scientific concepts, but also the ability of prospective teachers to utilize contextual learning resources. One potential learning resource is the high school environment, which can be used as a learning tool for Biology Education students. This article aims to describe the use of the high school environment as a learning tool for Biology Education Study Program students, specifically in supporting the understanding of Biology concepts and developing the competencies of prospective teachers. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation of learning activities. The results of the study indicate that the high school environment, such as school gardens, field areas, and green open spaces, can be used as a natural laboratory for Biology Education students to practice observation skills, environmental analysis, and Biology learning design. Utilizing the high school environment as a learning tool provides real-life learning experiences for students in preparing themselves as Biology educators.
